My
LearningCITY
An Interview with Dr. David Finch
Dr. David J. Finch is a community builder, researcher, social innovator, and educator passionate about disrupting the status quo. As one of the many driving forces behind LearningCITY Collective, he is the first of many LearningCITY Champions to be profiled.
-
I am the Board Chair of the LearningCITY Collective and value the intersection of humility and curiosity. My professional qualifications include a degree in political science, a Master's degree in International Relations, and a PhD in management. I spent 12 years working in tech, both in Canada and abroad before founding a sports marketing agency. These days, I am a full professor at MRU, and committed to inspiring students to disrupt the status quo and challenge themselves to meet their potential. I also sit on the Minister’s Council for Higher Education and Skills, advising the government of Alberta on higher education and championing talent and skill development in Calgary.
-
This is all about travel and working internationally. This was my defining experience because now, ”I know what I don’t know.”
-
Doing my Master’s in London gave me an appreciation of our echo chamber, an environment where a person only encounters information or opinions that reflect and reinforce their own, which triggered my pursuit of humility and curiosity. That understanding of learning as a deepening awareness of our limitations is a driving force for LearningCITY. It is a recognition that classroom learning is only one part of our experience as lifelong learners and that disrupting the way we define learning is essential to acknowledging the value of those experiences.
-
If Calgary was transformed into the city that never stops learning, the result would be a far more open and inclusive learning system and labour market. I would focus on breaking the natural monopoly of higher education by decoupling learning pathways and assessment.
Governance
The LearningCITY Collective is an independent, member-founded and volunteer-driven organization. A volunteer Executive Board must deliver on the organization’s purpose and vision. The Executive Board is supported by a diverse advisory committee composed of talent seekers, talent developers, and learners.
Operations
Our Board and Committees
The LearningCITY Collective is operationalized by three business units, which are supported by five volunteer advisory committees.
